Physical Description: Alexander Kynes is a human, with brown hair, blue eyes, and a straight posture. He is of Irish ancestry, and has a healthy complexion about him. He has not engaged in any sporting activities for a long time, although in the academy, he used to do amateur boxing. Kynes has ordinary strength compared to the others of his kind. And although bearing few scars, he has been in his fair share of fights, especially in his earlier years. Captain Kynes’ only visible imperfection is a scar on his stomach-region; a wound he received during a routine combat training exercise at Starfleet Academy.
During his time at the academy, Kynes broke bones on several occasions, and they didn’t heal completely.
Although Captain Kynes exercises on a regular basis, he does not have an extremely defined muscle tone. The exercise however, does bear the fruit of excellent health. He is a very keen fighter, although he has not had the opportunity to demonstrate his physical fitness in recent times.
Usually once a week, Kynes will participate in an hour-long jog in the gymnasium, to maintain the Starfleet health standards. Since he has a great duty as the Captain of the USS Endeavour, he does not have a lot of time to work out, but he manages to fit in a few minutes here and there, when the fancy passes… All in all, at 34 years of age, Alexander Kynes is aging quite well, and more then meets the fitness standards of Starfleet.
Biography:
Alexander Kynes was born to his two loving parents, Lucius Kynes and Natasha Kynes in the fair town of Belfast, Ireland. His earliest years were spent in the lush botanical gardens with his Mother, who had a devout interest in biology, and botany. His father was working as an architect at the time, and was distinguished as a well-respected man around the city. Alexander’s parents taught him starting from the moment he was born, whenever they could. This gave him a good foundation for future educational pursuits.
As a child, Alexander had a budding interest in xenobiology, and the study of alien species and cultures. His favourite aliens were the Andorians; finding their physical appearance amusing. In the Botanical Gardens of Belfast, his mother would read to him the many literary works of ancient Earth, including those of W.B Yeats, and Charles Dickens. Literature would be an interest that would well carry into his adult life. Taking great pleasure from poetry, Kynes began to spend more and more time at the library, quite a differential from most other boys his age. Kynes was admitted into the McClennan Institution of Advanced Learning at the age of 5, and remained there until the age of 12, when his rebellious nature ended up resulting in an extended suspension. Kynes proceeded to join the mainstream educational branch, and received top marks in many of his subjects.
At the age of 17, Kynes graduated from high school a year early, due to his fervent sense of ambition and willpower. However, in a tragic occurrence at Starfleet Medical, Kynes’ mother (Doctor Natasha Kynes) was infected with a mysterious virus she was researching, and died in the quarantine. Dismayed by his mother’s passing, Kynes slipped into a state of depression for almost a year, doing little but sleeping, eating, and pacing the length of his bedroom. The next year, Kynes felt it necessary to move on, and entered Starfleet academy, with aspirations of becoming an officer in Starfleet. Moving to San Francisco, Kynes excelled in the scientific and tactical courses at the academy. Over the vacations, Kynes tirelessly studied and gained extra credit for courses, in hopes of graduating a year early. This fervor died a year in however, when he first fell in love with another cadet, Samantha Kenson. They went out for much of his academy years, until they both graduated (after the standard 4 years.) Unfortunately, the two were assigned to different dutystations, and this greatly dismayed young Kynes. She was posted to Starbase 1, as a Medical Officer, and Kynes ended up on the USS Potemkin, one of the first great Constitution class starships. As a Science officer, Kynes learned many new things on their exploratory voyages, and maintained close contact with Samantha throughout his time abroad. After a brief 9 months onboard Potemkin, Kynes earned a position of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) for his exceptional research into pathological viruses, an area of science that was very close to his heart, homage to a past tragedy… Two years later, Kynes was yet again promoted, and his tour of duty onboard the Potemkin ended. Spending a few months on Earth for shore leave, he and Samantha caught up on old times, and rekindled their old love. This series of events nearly led to Kynes resigning his exploratory commission, and opting for an Earth-bound position so he could stay with her. However, at the last moment, Kynes realized he could be throwing away his chances at a great future as a starship captain, and decided to pursue his destiny elsewhere. Newly posted onboard the USS Redemption as the Chief Tactical Officer, Kynes embarked on yet another mission to discover ‘strange new worlds and civilizations.’ Heartbroken, Kynes left his love and soon after became entangled in a war with the Klingon Empire.
The Klingons were the Federation’s greatest enemy at the time, and many lives had already been lost on both sides. At the battle of Sector 234.6, Kynes first learned of the terrors of war. Taking an active role in several campaigns against the Klingons, Kynes was shocked by the atrocities both sides were committing. Along with Task Force Gamma, Alexander spent 3 years in endless conflict with the Klingons. With little time to regenerate their supplies, Kynes and his fellow crewmembers were stressed greatly. In a particularly violent battle, the Klingons managed to ambush the task force while they were recuperating their losses. Unable to efficiently forge a countermeasure, the Federation vessels were forced to stage a desperate retreat. The casualties were very high, and the USS Redemption’s Captain and First officer were both killed when a torpedo hit the bridge. Through the chaos, Kynes appointed himself as acting captain and organized the task force into a clean escape. For his honourable merits in Sector 234, Kynes was promoted to first officer, and once again posted on a refitted Redemption. Under the experienced Captain Balnaro, Kynes regained his tastes for exploration, but the scars of warfare remained. Under an unsteady cease-fire treaty, the Federation was once again free to explore the far reaches of space.
At the age of 34, Kynes was finally given a command position on the old Constitution refit Endeavour. Upon the USS Endeavour, he met the likes of Commander Vorak, an individual who would eventually become Kynes closest friend. After a few months of active service in exploration, Kynes was seriously wounded when the Endeavour had been tasked to save a trade station from pirates. Near death, Kynes was called back to Earth, where he spent the next year recupperating. This close call with mortality gave Kynes a new outlook on life. He decided to take some time off of active service as a starfleet Captain and to relax. Alexander spent some time on Rygil and Riza. After a short period of time however, Kynes discovered that relaxation was naught but a synonym for tedium. He eagerly returned to duty onboard the Endeavour, which was leaving on another mission. This mission however would be cut short quite soon however… Approximately a year before the Khitomer accords, the USS Endeavour was irreparably damaged in the Kumora Nebula against a force of renegade Klingons, working under the banner of the ‘Shield of Kahless.’ (Episode I: Infinite Peril) The USS Endeavour was called back to Starbase 29, where the Constitution Endeavour was due for a refit. Due to the persistent efforts of sabotage against the Endeavour by the renegades, and the conspiring acts of an Admiral Dawson, the original Endeavour was destroyed. To commemorate the ship, another Endeavour was ordered, under the famed new ‘Excelsior Class.’ The USS Endeavour (NCC 1845-A) was assigned to a mission of exploration, to seek out new civilizations, and to boldly go where to man had ever gone before.. (Episode II: The Ambassador)
Personality: Kynes is a classy gentleman, who’s been described by many as a ‘lady’s man.’ His command doctrine describes any problem as having a favourable solution, no matter how difficult to accomplish. In any situation, he strives to use and exploit the best possible outcome, and use anything to his advantage, to meet his goals. This ambitious behaviour helped him progress through the ranks relatively quickly. Although Kynes seeks amicability with everyone, there are only a few people he considers ‘close friends,’ such as Commander Vorak.
One of his deepest regrets is leaving Samantha Kenton, his sweetheart from the academy. After reaching the rank of lieutenant, he had the option of getting an earth-bound position, and staying with his love. However, the call of exploration was too much, and he had decided to leave. He often wonders what his life would have gone like if he had stayed with her.
Kynes is no stranger to pain. His mother mysteriously died when he was 17, and he fought in several campaigns against the Klingons in the 2280s. The horrors he saw while fighting against the Klingons scarred him quite deeply, and he has never been the same person since. Since the war, Kynes had a certain disdain for the Klingons, but he never openly expressed it. However, his opinion changed slightly when he met the captain and crew of the IKS Nej’rav (The Wounded IKS Nej’rav) Captain Glaen and Kynes developed a respect for one another after meeting two times, once where the Nej’rav wandered aimlessly into Federation space, and another time during the Khitomer accords when the Endeavour was assigned to escort the Nej’rav to the peace talks. (Episode X: New Friends, Old Enemies)
Kynes two main interests are Literature and music, particularly Jazz and Classical. During his early childhood, he was introduced to many giants of literature, and the interest carried well into his adult life. In his quarters, he keeps a library of hardcover books, preferring the works in their original forms, instead of on a PADD.
To many crewmen, Kynes remains aloof and distant, preferring a purely professional relation with his crew. However with many of the senior officers, he has developed close relationships with them. An aspiring captain, devoted friend, and a fan of tasteful artistry, Captain Alexander Kynes continues to devote his service to the Federation to this day…
