I will be frank on some things but don't think its just my opinion, its a basic overview. Anyway here we go just for some fun.....
STAR TREK ENDEAVOUR
THE E! ENTERTAINMENT SPECIAL....
Star Trek by now is well into the publics mind as well as pop culture. It's name is known everywhere. Its history in someways just as much.
Tonight we will be going behind the scenes of the most successful Star Trek series in over a decade. The spin off series Star Trek Endeavour.
Karl Dutton. Vorak/CO Producer: From the start we really wanted to go back to the movie era. Because we felt like that was the era that was only really lightly touched on from the films with are just focused on the main old cast. I mean at this point the Next Gen spin offs had been done to death and Enterprise had failed so we wanted to go in the opposite direction fro our last show.
Conor Fynes. Captain Kynes/CO Producer: Phoenix had been canceled because of cast disputes and low ratings. We always want to go back to that when we have time to give it a new edge but we wanted to do something different. And the most untouched era was the passage of time between the end of the original crews missions to the the next generation. At least on TV.
The series was given a green light when the they both co wrote the pilot. Infinite Peril. They quickly began casting.
Karl: Now when we were looking Jade we at once thought of my friend Jade Lawsley from the old series. We thought she was good and wanted to use her but of course due to her previous image we cast her as the original Doctor. The nice girl, and the choice to go the other way and do Matina was hers.
Jade Lawsley. Matina Jade: I joined the cast cause I knew them both. Karl for many years and really did not like the character they had given me. I was like, this is just Kalista Jade with a new name isn't it? How about I play this hard cookie security girl.
Conor: At first we had to sell us on the idea. But she got committed and died her hair black and off we went. The Studio it took until air date to settle them on the idea.
The next casting in the small cast of the first episode because of a huge battle before hand in which many crew were killed was the helm officer.
Karl: Well I had liked Micheal. He had messed me around on the last series but I gave him a chance cause he liked the old movie era. And you know...he did it again. But he shows up once in awhile in a background role. Thats life ya know and in the end John turned out much better anyway. At least from what we saw commitment wish.
When the first episode aired last December. Two members of the cast of that pilot had already dropped out. Micheal Gray and the actress who portrayed the female Doctor whom was meant to take over as the chief. Instead that called Scotland.
Kynes: We did what we had to do and recast. So in the second episode along comes John and Nick and they do great and we have kept them since *laughs*
Karl: Apart from us three the only guy who stayed from the pilot was Daniel Clark who played a character of the same name. Don't ask me why we just did it at the time. And he was good and committed to. Of course Nick was my number 2 on the Phoenix show and I had been trying to bring him in from the start. And we sat down and created this sorta Scotty of sickbay.
Nick Trottier. Beathan MacAnimire: Well I came in and we made this character. And it worked because the story was fixed that way that the ship was being re crewed.
--
I just Kinda played it like Scotty type guy who cares and does medicine.
Daniel Clark was only the 4th cast member to stay on for the second episode.
Daniel Clark: I don't know what happened. All of a sudden ya know everyones gone or changed. But its settled after that.
The other role of helm officer came about from the person who had auditioned and got the role next to it on the bridge. Navigation.
John Bowden. Rudger Mcvanlen: Well I cam in on the second episode to be the navigation officer and then out of nowhere half way through filming Micheal was gone. So I changed seats and took helm instead. It was a lot more fun in the end that way and my character was promoted a lot for that reason. I started an ensign and I'm now what? Lt Commander. I just became a main character and it happened that way. I didn't ask for it or anything.
The one role that had caused a "curse" through out the series is the Intelligence role.
Karl: I think we have bought in like 3 people for that now. And they always quit for reasons. The first didn't like the good and became a regular crew member. The was the whole Conor thing and then disappeared again after trying to get him back recently so.. yeah. And the 3rd god knows. Did 1 episode I think. Its now become more of guest role until someone stays around *laughs*
As the series got high ratings world wide the cast more additions including William Lichfield and Tom Salerno.
Conor: Unfortunately Tom was killed during the first season and that really hurt the show in terms of us mourning for him and missing him a lot. He as always a very exciting and and fun person to be around. But we had to move on and unfortunately that kicked off the hole Conor Zepplin thing into the next gear why I was away.
An attention during first season Conor Zepplin became a star of the show and soon was written more and more into episodes.
Karl: Yeah for an operations officer he did a lot of jobs. And trust me it was him who got to write in "Conor sees" you know "tactical is dead and takes it as well" and it got kinda silly at one point. He was good actor and I liked him until the end. But I could see why most of the others didn't and called for him to go.
John: Well it started with him giving us reviews after every take. And it became really picky and stuff. Just saying stuff for sake of telling you that you were wrong and he was right ALL THE TIME. Man I hated his stuck up attitude.
Nick: Trouble was he had it to begin with and only John had a problem. Then when he got more power on the show it got out of control. And whole scenes were being rewrote for him. Then he started calling us names and fighting verbally with us.
Karl: It calmed down for awhile and then Jeff came in and shuck it up again.
Jeff who was the cousin of the late Tom Salerno came into the show and at once began fighting with Conor Wainer the actor and that soon came through Conor and Dorian there characters.
Kynes: I began effecting the show and the script. Then I took my first break and Karl was on his own. This Jeff came in and Bam. War.
Karl: Yeah I was in middle of debates. When Sarah came in as Snow , a role who still hasn't found a job to stay in, she backed him and then Nick and John did the same. And because I was the one in charge and because Conor and Conor *chuckle* were friends I started to get a backlash. In the end Jeff left the show and Conor got demoted and wrote out of the show a little as punishment. But when Conor returned he was right back doing it again. So I called him and fired him, and after had turned on me and tried to sabotage the show it gave me great pleasure to do that.
Jade: See I knew him and spoke to him. He was always nice to me and Karl but man did he piss off the others. And in the end us to. He just had to go.
John: Ding dong the witch was dead ya know. Good actor, asshole though. Glad to the back of the arrogant **** to say the least.
Nick: The set calmed down and I make no bones in saying I hated the guy to. I tried to make peace so many times and so many times he just was a dick back to me. So yeah, theres the door.
Filming however continued and Star Endeavour was a fan favorite despite regular cast changes. During the pre production and then during the series itself. The Endeavour itself was changed due to demand and change of direction.
Karl: Now we at first chose the original Constitution refit and man that was down to to emotion that goes with design from the original. After two episodes we realized a retiring starship class really wasn't what we wanted.
Conor: So we blew it up. Made it a new and sleeker excelsior class and off we went to the races adding the A.
Now as the series is well into season to more problems have arrived.
Karl: Okay well , basically a lot of guys were either not showing up and doing other things or just showing up for short little bit. So I fired them. A lot of the cast are welcome back if they ya know make themselves committed again. But yeah. Bye bye guys.
Also Conor is having some personnel problems so I kinda took over the main role and he cut back.
Conor: I want to get involved more but I'm just needed to sort a few things out at the moment. I think Conor W's loss was a bad thing but that wasn't the reason really. I will be back at the helm its just a question of time. An I'm leaving to shop in good hands.
The first time in star trek history the Captain is not the main character, more the first officer is. Many agree that hopefully that will change before production begins on season 3.
Star trek Endeavour, a great star trek success but a roller coaster for its cats. Only time will tell what is to come....
