This was a short story I wrote for a school contest. I had half an hour to write it, and it was entered into the graduates category (two years above my age.) Considering how little time I had to write it, I'm proud of it. The prompt for writing was that there was something buried underneath our school, suffice to say I went in a slightly different direction then the other people.
Enjoy.
CONSPIRACIES
Written by Conor Fynes
The student body was sent home early that day. Flooding out of the school doors, I could hear the inquisitive murmurs of boys and girls alike, each formulating their own theory on the matter, no doubt. As I followed the sidewalk’s linear track, I recollected the happenings of the preceding hours. It was within reason to say that the teachers had been left in the dark as well. I could remember their faces, painted with a palette of wonder, much alike the youth they were assigned to instruct. Sensing a scent of urgency over the matter, the students complied to their given edicts without question. Our minds raced alongside the countless possibilities. As I had left the classroom, I caught a glimpse of our principal. Immediately I knew that the saying ‘ignorance is bliss’ pertained a lot of truth concerning the situation. He was obviously aware his usually healthy complexion was now sulphurous in nature. The motion crossed my mind to interview him briefly on the matter, yet I refrained. I was already well aware of what answer I would receive.
The sidewalk was coated in sunlit luminescence as I slowly treaded through the suburban jungle. In light of the events, I felt surreal, as if I was trapped within a lucid dream. I have always been a law-abiding citizen; a responsible individual… Yet the curiosity I was burdened with demanded satiation… Contrary to my character-likely course of action, I decided that I would investigate the mystery, as soon as the night descended. Smiling mischievously, a rare excitement churned throughout my body.. Running the rest of the way home, I meticulously planned my operation.
As the moon rose out of the trees, I crept onto the school grounds. My eyes widened. Several white domes had been erected over the school. ‘No doubt an act of the government,’ I thought, but wondered why they had not evacuated the civilian populace out of the sector, as they usually did with cover-ups such as this. I was something of an aficionado on conspiracies; I could hardly believe I was stuck in the middle of one. I crept across the field, as the sky began to illuminate…
The following events happened nearly too fast to recall… I spun around in a daze, my sense of coherence torn asunder. A salvo of lights filled the night sky, forming a systematic train of motion. Descending slowly, my heart’s rhythm increased, accompanied by a crescendo of ‘thuds’ The macadam around my feet began to churn around, in a symphony of discord.. The lines of reality and fantasy began to fade, at least relative to my perception.. Colours flooded my sight. First blue, then yellow, red, then blue again…
“Where am I?”
Silence for a moment the a voice reverberated throughout the chamber.
“There are conspiracies everyday… There’s no point in hiding that fact however. Tell me… why did you go back to the school?”
The voice had failed to answer my question.
“I needed to know the truth!”
“The truth is that we have our reasons for not disclosing our secrets.. I hope you’re aware… that whatever may or may not have been there, has since been removed from your school’s premises.
“What was it?!?” I screamed at my captor.
A figure stepped forward. It stared at me with a pair of somniferous, almond eyes. It’s pale gray skin rippled in rhythm to the waves of light that shone upon it. Each hand consisted of three multi-jointed fingers. Staring into it’s dull palour, it amazed me how… human it looked.
“What was it?!?” I repeated, my first inquiry having met no reply.
I felt paralyzed.
“Does it matter?” it asked me. It’s lips curled, and I fell asleep.
I woke up to the shine of the morning sun. Basking in the comfort of my bed, thoughts of the night washed upon the shores of my mind. At first, they came to me in a distant haze, but then they began to develop. I pulled the bed sheets over my head, and convulsed in fear.
Fighting the horror implanted in my mind, I questioned myself…
“Was that nothing but a dream?”
Enjoy.
