This Was actually my GCSE Creative Writing Coursework
I thought i'd see what you all think
Without a Trace
Captain Karl Jones stood in the bows of HMS Spencer looking out at the Sea. Stars reflected in the sea like Diamonds. He ran his hands along the metal on either side of him till they met to form the forward point of his cruiser. Karl liked the sea best at night. All was quiet, all was calm all was so much simpler.
Karl walked back through his ship to his cabin. He stepped through the door and as it closed behind him Karl sighed. He stepped over to his bed and lay there.
He lent over to his recording device and activated
“Captains Log. 14th June 2007” He began
“The Spencer is heading southward through the South China Sea towards Sydney harbour for much need shore leave. Our diplomatic mission to the Rebels in China, although successful, was a drain on all the crew. Ensign Sisko somehow managed to convince me to let him water ski behind the Spencer, I’m not sure how he managed to do it but he did. We’re due to arrive in Sydney in about two weeks. End Log”
Karl turned his log recorder off and lay back. He stared at the ceiling and was just about to fall a sleep when the voice of the first Officer echoed through the Ship:
“All personal Red alert, Captain Jones to the Bridge, Repeat Red alert, All hands to battle Stations”
Karl stood sighing quietly he pulled on his uniform jacket and ran out of his door
Several minutes later Karl arrived on the Bridge
“Report?” He asked Commander Thomas White, his first Officer
“We’ve just been over flown by three MiG’s” Tom replied
“Bloody Hell” Karl said sitting in his command chair “What Class?”
Tom went over to the Radar station before replying
“They seem too be…MiG 29’s ‘Fulcrums’ sir”
Karl nodded
“What country?” He asked
“We can’t tell sir, they don’t have any markings and no transponder frequency we recognise, we can tell you they are the older MiG 29’s sir, probably leaked from the crumbling USSR” The Radar officer replied
“Send a message to the admiralty let them know what is happening, and tell those bastards out there to stand down and go home, or we’ll respond with deadly force” Karl Ordered
The Communications officer nodded then several seconds later he frowned
“Problem Ensign?” Karl asked
“Well sir” The man replied “I’m getting a response, but it seems to be in Vietnamese”
Karl also frowned
“Can you translate?” Karl asked
The Ensign was about to respond when Lt Richards from Tactical shouted from across the Bridge
“Sir, Torpedo in the Water!”
“All hands brace for impact” Karl Exclaimed through a com link to the rest of the Ship
Seconds later the ship was rocked by a huge explosion
“Damage report!” Karl shouted as he pulled himself from the floor and looked at his now debris filled Bridge
“Major hull breach, deck 5 Section 4, emergency repair crews are responding” Tom replied
“Fire a missile at the lead MiG” Karl ordered and looked out of the Bridge’s viewport as several seconds later a stream of light burst from the deck like a firework, but with deadly potential. It soared through the sky before hitting the lead MiG causing an explosion and sending down in flames
“Target down, the other two MiG’s are bugging out west. Their retreating” Richards reported
Several of the Bridge crew smiled
“Ahh don’t celebrate yet, the engineers can’t plug the breach, we’re sinking” Tom said bitterly
Karl groaned
“Abandon ship” He said and then as his officers stood and headed for a lifeboat he turned to Tom “Send a message to the admiralty, and make sure you get supplies and weapons, we’re only about 20 miles of the Coast, make sure everyone follows the flare on our Lifeboat”
Tom nodded and got about his work
Karl looked round his once tidy and calm Bridge, and saw debris. He spotted a young woman, a Lieutenant, trapped under some debris.
“Don’t worry Mellissa, we’re on our way” Karl said as he ran over and lifted the debris off the woman and helped her up
“Thank you Captain” She said before running out the door to a lifeboat.
Tom Ran over to Karl
“Captain It’s time to go” He said
Karl nodded and he and Tom ran off the Bridge and struggled along the slanted ship to a lifeboat
Karl and Tom climbed into a lifeboat. The Spencer was listing heavily now. Tom was just about to let go of the mooring rope when Karl spotted a young Ensign scramble along the ship
“Tom wait” He said pointing
The Ensign Climbed into the Boat
“Captain, I was stuck in engineering sir, no one else is left on board” She said
Tom pushed off and Karl watched as his proud ship sank beneath the waves leaving no trace, he sighed before reaching for a flare and lighting it before leading the Fleet of Lifeboats westward
Welcome to The Endeavour
Office of the Admiralty
Portsmouth
1445 16th June 2007
Commander Chris Rogers walked across the marble floors of the Royal Navy’s Admiralty Office in Portsmouth. He was heading for the officer of Admiral Collins. He walked through a door and up a flight of stairs before arriving at a corridor packed with the top brass. Chris walked along the corridor feeling slightly insignificant. He found the Door to Admiral Collin’s office and knocked on the door.
“Enter” A gruff voice responded
Chris opened the door and walked in. Once he closed the door he snapped to attention, brought his right hand to a salute and said:
“Commander Chris Rogers, reporting as ordered”
“At Ease Commander, have a seat” Collins replied
“Thank you sir” Chris said as he sat
“Commander, two days ago we lost contact with HMS Spencer” Collins began as he pressed a button revealing a screen on the wall behind him “their second to last message said they we’re here, in the South China sea, 20 miles off the Vietnamese coast, but in International Waters. They Were over flown by three MiG’s and several minutes later a Final Message was sent reporting they we’re sinking”
“The Spencer!?” Chris asked
“I’m afraid so” Collins replied
“With respect sir, what am I here for” Chris wanted to know
“We want you to take command of HMS Endeavour, with the Rank of Captain” Collins answered reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a forth Rank Insignia for Chris’s uniform “She’s a invincible class aircraft carrier, armaments of two 20 mm anti-aircraft guns and 3 close-in weapons systems, over 20 aircraft including 12 Harriers, 6 Euro-fighters specially modified for sea and four F 18’s we’ve loaned from the Americans”
“Thank You Sir” Chris replied slightly in awe as he took the Rank insignia and clipped it next to his others “Where is she?”
“Portsmouth Harbour, you can’t miss her” Collins answered “Good Luck Captain”
Chris walked up the gang-plank onto the flight deck of HMS Endeavour. A woman with Rank Insignia of Commander walked over
“Captain Chris Rogers” She said “Welcome aboard the Endeavour”
“Thank You Commander, Commander?” Chris asked
“Commander Robin Stryker, your XO” She replied
“Good to meet you Commander” Chris said
“You too sir” Robin replied
Robin led Chris along the flight deck and towards the Bridge tower, she led up some stairs and onto the bridge.
He looked around, the Bridge was large and had top of the line consoles. He walked over to the window and looked out a the sea
“Captain?” Robin said
“Yes Commander?” Chris replied
“We’ve got some people you need to meet” Robin stated “Lieutenant Commander William Munro Our Tactical and Security Officer, Lieutenant Commander Charlie Black chief Engineer, Lieutenant Holly Robinson Helm Officer, Doctor Roger Right and Major Rebecca Starlight our Royal Marine Commander”
Chris Looked at Each of them as Robin pointed them out
“ It’s nice to meet you All, I’d like to see you all in the Mess later on once we’re at sea” Chris said
several of them smiled
“When can we depart?” Chris asked
“We’ve got our Chief of the fighter corps. on a test flight in one of those F 18’s” Robin replied with a Grin
Almost as soon as she spoke a fighter soared over the Endeavour
“That’s her” Robin said
“Her?” Chris thought
The Jet went to the edge of the harbour before coming round and landing smoothly on the Flight deck
“Flight Lieutenant Emma Connors” Will said
The Woman still in her flight gear walked up the stairs and onto the Bridge
“Flight Lieutenant Emma Connors reporting for Duty” She said
“Welcome back” Chris said, noticing Will looking at her, and wondering if there was more than meets the eye
“Sorry, I’m late sir, I couldn’t resist and we didn’t think you’d be back till 1615” Emma said
“Captains Prerogative” Chris said causing a few chuckles “Ok everyone stations”
The Crew went to their individual stations and Chris sat in his command chair
“Get us permission from the Harbourmaster to depart” He said
“Permission Granted” Will said from Tactical several seconds later
“Helm take us out” Chris ordered
Holly entered a few commands and turned the wheel and brought the ship till it faced the opening of the harbour and engaging the Engines
The Endeavour sped through the harbour at a speed not normally acceptable and out into the channel
Voyage to Gibraltar
Mess Hall
HMS Endeavour
English Channel
1622 16th June 2007
With the Endeavour heading through the English Channel on a course for Gibraltar, Chris had thought he’d meet his crew in the ships mess hall. However Captain Chris Rogers was now lost. He was on deck 7, that much he knew and it seemed quiet before he realised that the ship was huge. He could hear footsteps in the Distance
“Hello?” He called
“Captain?” a voice called back
“Yes who’s this” Chris asked heading for the sound of the voice
“Ensign Martina Dann from engineering sir” The voice that Chris could now identify as a female’s answered
“Ensign, I need some help I appear to be lost” Chris called feeling slightly foolish
At that moment a young Ensign rounded a corner on the corridor
“Captain” She said “Where are you trying to get to?”
“The Mess” Chris replied
“Ahh” Martina said “Your actually really close, along the Corridor turn left after four doors, first door on the right, Sir”
“Thank You Ensign” Chris said
“Your welcome Captain” Martina said
“See you around Ensign” Chris said with a smile
“See you around Captain” Martina replied with matching smile
Chris walked off around the Corridor and followed the Ensigns Instructions
Will was talking, well more like flirting, with Emma in one of the corner seats as Chris walked in.
“Captain” He said looking up
“Commander” Chris said looking at his tactical and Chief Pilot sitting actually quite close together
Chris turned to look at the others who where on the other side of the Mess to the corner where Will and Emma where, he went over to them and sat down
“I take it we should leave those two alone?” Chris asked with a grin
“That would be a good idea” Robin replied raising her eyebrows suggestively
“Well anyway, Robin could you get me a map of this place?” Chris asked
“Of course, I’ll bring it to your quarters later” Robin replied
“Thank You” Chris said
He turned to the bar
“Hey Warren” He called to the Bartender “Bring us a glass each of our own personal favourites, by the way mines a neat scotch”
Warren nodded having talked to all the crew earlier that day and a minute or so later he carried a tray over and handed the drinks out
“To the best crew, by the looks of things, a captain could ever have” Chris Toasted “Lets see what’s out there”
Chris raised his glass and the others followed suit
Robin walked along the corridor on Deck 2 towards the Captains personal quarters, it was right bellow the hanger which encompassed Deck 1. She looked along a dark corridor as she passed, out of habit and spotted Will and Emma, standing close together…very close together
Robin smiled as she continued along the corridor till she reached the door of the Captains Quarters. She rang the bell and several seconds later the door was opened and Chris stood there.
“I’ve got the Map you wanted sir” Robin said
“Ahh thank you Commander” Chris Said “want a drink?”
“Yes please” Robin Replied
Chris turned and went inside and Robin followed him
“I’ve only got scotch I’m afraid” Chris called looking for some glasses
“That’s Ok” Robin said “We can get some other stuff in Gibraltar”
Chris found two glasses and a bottle and poured the drink and they both took a drink
“Whoa” Robin Exclaimed “That’s really strong!”
Chris laughed
“You’ll never guess what I just saw” Robin said after she recovered from the drink
“What?” Chris asked
“Well you know Commander Munro and Flight Lt Connors…” Robin said using their formal names “Well they were…”
“You don’t need to say any more” Chris Said “I can guess”
Robin and Chris looked serious for a second before laughing
“We’d better keep an eye on them” Robin said between laughs
A load grinding noise was heard from the Hanger deck
“What the Hel was that?” Chris asked
Robin shrugged
“Come on lets go check” Chris said and stood and he and Robin walked out the Door
Chris walked onto the Hanger Deck and looked around, the place was huge it went down to the other end of the ship. He couldn’t find the source of the Noise
“Captain on Deck” Someone shouted and all the officers snapped to attention
“At Ease” Chris called along the deck “Deck officer over here please”
A Ensign ran out from behind a parked F 18
“Yes Captain?” He said
“What was that screeching noise about three minutes ago?” Chris asked
“That was the sound of a F 18 landing” The man replied
“At 2100?” Chris asked
“Oh yea sorry” Robin said “I kind of planned a night time training mission for tonight I sort of forgot”
“Well that explains it then” Chris said “Dismissed Ensign…Ensign?”
“Wood” The man repliedbefore saluting and walking back to the F18
“Robin Remind me to get sound-proofing put in my Quarters” Chris said
“I will” Robin replied “Well it’s getting later I’d better be getting to bed”
“Ok see you in the Morning” Chris said
Robin smiled
“Good night Chris” Robin said
“Good night Robin” Chris said and they set of in different directions
